Season 9, Episode 7 of TVNZ’s Grand Designs New Zealand featured this striking rustic home we were proud to build in Loburn, North Canterbury.

Inspired by the forward-thrusting shape of a stealth bomber, this new build was especially distinctive among houses on Grand Designs because we were able to build it on time and within budget. Maybe it made for slightly undramatic television, but the viewers loved it, and for the owners it was a great experience too, free from the stress that seems to go hand in hand with most houses on the show.

Supreme award winner

This quirky and wonderful house also won the Supreme House of the Year Award from Masterbuilders in the under $1million category at the 2026 Canterbury Region House of the Year Awards. These achievements recognise not only the home’s unusual design, but also the skill, care and collaboration involved in bringing it to life.

A great working relationship makes the difference

Todd aims to be easy to work with and have a great relationship with all his clients, and that was certainly the case with the Loburn House.

It was a team effort where Todd worked very closely with the very hands-on owners to bring their vision to life, using as much recycled material as possible, and accommodating their desire to do much of the finishing and interior work themselves, creating a home that feels deeply personal.

Timber for the exterior cladding and interior linings includes freshly sawn 105-year-old cedar outside, with Oregon used inside. Personality is added by the corrugated-steel trim, deep red sliding doors and feature walls, sage coloured kitchen cabinets and a wood burner in hot orange. Polished concrete floors provide continuity throughout the house.
